The process of managing your online presence involves a number of steps - a critical one being to monitor your websites and use the feedback from this process to help you continually improve your online presence. However it often amazes me at how many websites I see that do not have any monitoring/feedback tools associated with the site. Without monitoring how your website is performing, it makes it difficult to identify areas for improvement as well as areas that are performing well and can make re-design/improvements a daunting task.

How?

If you have a website, there are a number of tools that you can use to help you monitor its performance and use. One of the most common and accessible tools is Google Analytics. And best of all, it's FREE.

Google Analytics not only lets you measure sales and conversions, but also gives you fresh insights into how visitors use your site, how they arrived on your site, and how you can keep them coming back.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a feature packed tool with a wide range of reporting function. However there are also a number of easily accessible reports that can provide you with quick and easy to digest information about your site.

Why?

The key features I recommend using in Google Analytics as a first point of call are:

  • Analysing visits and traffic flow on your website;
  • Finding out how visitors are finding your site and which pages they are "landing" on;
  • Seeing what types of devices users are using to access your site - great to test how your site looks on these devices; and
  • Finding out which pages on your site have the highest level of "exits" - ie on which pages are you losing browsers.

If you are not using Google Analytics (or an equivalent) on your website, I recommend that you look to install the service today. Knowing how your website is being used will help you to better manage and improve the site.
